Mid back pain

Thoracic spine pain is also called mid back pain. This region of the spine goes from the base of the neck all the way down to the end of the rib cage. Mid back pain is not as common as neck or low back pain, however when experienced it can be painful causing distress.

Prevalence

Every year, around 10% of Australian’s will experience mid back pain. Though, it is more common in children and females. Like most other forms of back pain, research suggests that a history of back pain will increase occurrences, especially if the first episode was severe.

Risk factors

Mid back pain is strongly associated with the following factors:

  • Concurrent muscle or joint pain
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Backpack use
  • Postural habits (poor)
  • Stress
  • Growth and physical pains.

Regardless of where pain is located along the spine, it is important to have a qualified chiropractor look at your spine and determine what’s going on. In most cases (less than 2%), nothing serious is going on. A chiropractor should be able to give you self treatments and self management options in order to improve your symptoms and function.
