Ankle pain refers to discomfort in the ankles. This pain could be the result of an injury or medical condition, such as arthritis.
People of all ages can experience ankle pain. However, it is more common in active men under the age of 24 and athletes. For women, ankle pain is more prevalent in those 30+ years of age.
There are a range of risk factors relating to ankle pain, strains and sprains, including:
- Poor athletic condition: attempting strenuous physical exercise without conditioning beforehand can increase the risk of straining and spraining the ankle muscles and ligaments. Conditioning involves strengthening exercises and ankle and calf stretching.
- Muscle and ligament fatigue: towards the end of a workout or other physical activity, muscles and ligaments can become fatigued. During this period, people often try to “push through”, which can increase the risk of injury.
- Not warming up before physical exercise: going straight into exercise without warming up by stretching or walking can increase the risk of ankle sprains and strains. Warming up before physical exercise loosens the muscles and ligaments and reduces the risk of tears and stretches.
- Excessive weight: walking, running and jumping with excess weight creates a greater load on the joints. This can cause the ligaments and muscles to stretch or tear during activity.
Other factors include:
- Sprained ankle
- Bone structure
- Pronation of the foot
- Flat feet
- Prior ankle injury
- Sports participation.
Symptoms of ankle pain can include:
- Swelling in the joint
- Burning pain
- Stiffness in the joint
- Limited ability to walk, run or bear weight on the injured/sore ankle.
Ankle pain can be the cause of a range of different conditions and injuries. These can include:
- Stress fracture
- Arthritis of the ankle joint
- Inflamed or torn ligament
- Rheumatoid, reactive, septic and psoriatic arthritis
- Broken ankle/foot
- Achilles tendon rupture
- Achilles tendonitis
- Tarsal tunnel syndrome.
